A Sunken Excavator Transformed into an Underwater Oasis: FIFISH E-Master Redefines Marine Ecology Mapping

Bay of Plenty, New Zealand · April 2023

Challenge & Background: When Machinery Becomes a Marine Habitat

In the early 2000s, a 12-ton excavator accidentally sank in the waters of New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty. Over time, this forgotten piece of machinery evolved into a thriving habitat, sheltering coral growth and marine life. While local divers were aware of its existence, this unique ecological phenomenon had never been formally mapped or documented due to the risks of traditional diving methods and the potential for ecological disturbance.

Precision Exploration: The Innovative Application of FIFISH E-Master

To study and protect this remarkable marine ecosystem, Bay Dynamics NZ deployed the FIFISH E-Master ROV, whose specialized features enabled groundbreaking advancements:

· Forward Q-DVL for Precise Positioning & Distance Lock: The ROV maintained a precise distance from the excavator without disturbing the fragile coral ecosystem, ensuring stable, high-quality ecological imaging.

· U-INS Inertial Navigation for Detailed Mapping: Using advanced inertial navigation technology, the FIFISH E-Master successfully mapped the site for the first time, generating a high-precision 3D underwater model of this artificial reef.

· 4K Ultra-HD Imaging System: Capturing stunningly detailed footage, the ROV documented coral growth on the excavator’s surface and the vibrant marine life activity, offering researchers and the public an unprecedented view of this underwater transformation.
